Baking for a Self-Determined Life for Young Women in Turkey

Our latest project in Izmir offers qualified bakery courses for motivated but unskilled or underqualified women who find themselves in social or economic hardship and therefore seek financial independence — meaning they need to take their future into their own hands.
In early 2025, the first bakery courses for disadvantaged women began in the metropolis of Izmir, home to 4 million people. The aim is to enable young women to enter the job market through a three-month training program followed by a certificate.
Over the course of the year, a total of 120 young people will be trained in bakery courses across six training modules. Comprehensive knowledge about hygiene, equipment, and materials used in the bakery trade is provided to ensure intensive, hands-on training in traditional and popular baked goods.
The “Bread Against Need” Foundation organizes the project on site together with the “Soroptimist Club Izmir,” in close cooperation with the “Izmir Chamber/Guild of Bakery and Confectionery” (Izmir CABP) and local authorities.
