Gambia-Tanji

May 2016 – September 2017
Training bakery of “House of Skills”, “MME” and “Brot gegen Not”

The “House of Skills” vocational training project is run jointly by MMEmpowerment and “Brot gegen Not”-The Heiner Kamps Foundation. The vocational training center is in Tanji, a suburb of the capital Banjul.

Young Gambians are trained in a wide variety of trades (bricklayers, car mechanics, carpenters, metal workers). All training courses are very practically oriented, theory is taught in a supportive manner. Since September 2017, 5 young Gambians have been trained in the bakery trade in the training bakery, 3 young women and two young men. The bakery team learns with the help of the “Brot gegen Not” experts, mostly German Master bakers and confectioners (m/f), all knowledge and skills to master the bakery trade in the future.

Baking in practice and theory, technical arithmetic, calculation, creating recipes are just as much a part of this as open-minded dealing with customers, accepting responsibility within the shift or delivering orders on time.

The main goals of the project are:

1. Training of trainees through “House of Skills” to become bakers according to the international UIB standard to secure their future standard of living.

There is also a collaboration between “Brot gegen Not” and the competent authority NAAQA in order to jointly create a uniform training standard for the bakery trade in Gambia.

2. The supply of the local population with good quality bread at affordable prices and the sale of European baked goods specialties to restaurants and hotels with the aim of promoting the baked goods culture in Gambia.

3. The independent, profitable operation of the training bakery through the generation of profits that serve to financially support the project sponsor “House of Skills” and its projects.
